Rethinking Your United Way
RESOLUTIONS
It is once again the beginning of a new year. Many people take this opportunity to try to make their lives better by committing to some New Year’s resolutions. People who have studied New Year’s resolutions have found they are typically short-lived, as less than one-in-ten people succeed with their resolutions for a whole year.
RETHINKING
Rather than make another unfulfillable resolution for your United Way this year, such as “Our campaign will do better this year,” I want you to try rethinking your United Way this year.
One definition for rethinking is “to reconsider a decision, belief, or perspective with the goal of changing or refining it, often by challenging assumptions and seeking new viewpoints for growth, better problem-solving, or adaptation.”
Instead of doing the same-old, same-old once again in 2026, try rethinking what you have always done at your United Way, and then change or refine it to grow your resources, increase your impact, and remain relevant.
HOW-TO RETHINK
So how do you go about rethinking your United Way? The best way is to seek out and find new ideas and new ways of doing things. While that seems like a lot of work and you might not know where to start – I have the answer for you. A simple example of rethinking is instead of trying to explain everything your United Way does, laser focus on sharing the three things donors need to know to give to your United Way. We’ll help you rethink your messaging by explaining the three things donors need to know and how-to laser focus your message on those three things.
